Why Is Skin Care So Important For Diabetics?

The American Diabetes Association advises patients to minimize their risk of skin-related diabetes complications by following these guidelines:

  • Keep skin clean and dry.
  • Apply talcum powder to parts of the body where moisture is likely to develop.
  • Avoid bathing or showering in extremely hot water.
  • Prevent dry skin by using moisturizers and running a humidifier in your home in dry climates.
  • Treat cuts immediately with antibacterial soap and water. Make sure to avoid the use of harsh agents such as alcohol or iodine.

Remember to always see your doctor or a dermatologist for unresolved skin problems as quickly as possible. By following the simple recommendations above you can aviod more serious medical complications associated with skin related diabetes conditions.

Identifying Cholesterol

  • If the food your eating has a mother (i.e. eggs / beef / fish) then the food contains cholesterol.
  • If the food you are eating does not have a mother (i.e advocado / lettuce / green beans) then it does not contain  cholesterol!

The real impact in and on your body

Learn the real impact in and on your body when you do these healthy and unhealthy things.

What happens when…I have a cocktail before dinner? When you pour that pre-dinner drink, it’s been hours since you ate lunch. After your midday meal, your blood sugar rose, then dropped. To bring your blood sugar back to normal, your liver began releasing glucose into the blood. However, alcohol temporarily shuts down that process. In some cases this could cause you to develop hypoglycemia, or very low blood sugar. That’s especially true if you inject insulin or take diabetes medications. Bottom line: Never drink on an empty stomach. Hold off on your glass of wine or drink until after you’re well into your meal. And limit yourself to just one drink; when consumed with food, one drink is perfectly healthy.

What happens when…I spend the day really happy? When you’re feeling chipper, your body settles into a state of calm that has several physiological benefits. First, it keeps stress hormones at bay. And that means your blood sugar, heart rate, and blood pressure all stay mellow. Studies show that a calm, happy mood also can boost your immune system, making you less susceptible to colds and flu. Then there are the psychological benefits. Studies reveal that diabetes patients who are upbeat and optimistic are more likely to eat right and exercise—and have better blood sugar to show for it. Bottom line: Keeping a sunny attitude directly benefits your blood sugar management, as well as your heart health and overall well-being.

What happens when…I skip breakfast? When you wake up after a long night’s rest, your body has gone as much as 12 hours without a meal. That usually means you have a shortage of glucose in your bloodstream. Skip breakfast, and that shortage grows worse, meaning you get that low-blood-sugar jittery feeling, your brain is lacking in fuel, and your entire body chemistry starts the day out of whack. Even worse, skipping breakfast sets you up for bad eating choices later that day—unhealthy snacks, binge eating at lunch. Bottom line: While it’s natural to focus on dinner as the main meal of the day, breakfast plays the greatest role in establishing healthy internal chemistry for the day. Make a commitment: Never skip breakfast.

What happens when…I snack on an apple? Every bite of a juicy apple delivers vital nutrients and other food compounds that keep your metabolism on an even keel, curb your appetite, and nourish your heart. Chief among them is fiber, specifically soluble fiber, which has a talent that’s critical for controlling blood sugar: It turns all gooey in your intestines. That slows down digestion, which means the sugar in an apple—and it has plenty—is absorbed slowly. Eating one apple barely causes a blip in your blood sugar! Bottom line: An apple a day really does keeps the doctor away.

What happens when…I spend all day sitting around? On a day when you don’t give your muscles enough work to do, glucose remains in your bloodstream, going unused. Over time, a sit-around lifestyle encourages two major problems. Your body begins to convert that unused sugar to fat, putting hard-to-lose weight on your belly, butt and thighs. And that extra glucose in the blood increases dangerous compounds called AGEs that damage nerve and blood cells. Bottom line: Sitting all day is a set-up for bad blood sugar, weight gain, and the maladies they both cause. Change your perspective: Think of two hours of sitting as being as bad for you as eating a large candy bar. Sit all day, and that’s like eating lots of candy bars. The antidote? As simple as getting up each hour and walking for a few minutes.

How important is Magnesium you can think of ....

Magnesium has to be one of my all-time favorite minerals because it has beneficial effects all over the body.  Think of it as your chill pill because it makes you relax from your head down to your toes.  Magnesium is important for a good mood, first and foremost, but most people don't realize it's also necessary for stabilizing blood pressure. Without enough magnesium, your blood pressure rises.  You need the mineral to keep your heart beating in perfect rhythm and to keep your pancreas functioning optimally.
Deficiencies of magnesium can lead to cardiac and blood sugar issues.  Western societies are short on magnesium in part as a result of soil depletion and the processing of food.  I believe this is one reason why we are seeing so much heart disease, depression, and diabetes. Magnesium is not as chic as calcium.  You don't see people wearing magnesium mustaches, do you?  If you did, they'd be green, since magnesium is found in a lot of green foods, including seaweed, spinach, turnip greens, and spirulina.  It would not be pretty.
I feel that magnesium is so important that without enough of it in your system, you will suffer more diseases in your lifetime and die sooner than if you had normal, healthy levels. Seriously, it's that important.
Magnesium deficiency can cause muscle weakness, tremor, and spasm.  Your heart is a muscle.  If you get a spasm or tremor in your heart, you're in trouble.  In fact, magnesium deficiency can cause arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, irregular contraction, and rapid heart rate.  Some studies show that magnesium also benefits people with asthma by preventing bronchospasm.

Magnesium is so protective of the brain that when you run low, you are more prone to migraines, insomnia, anxiety, phobias, brain fog, depression, and suicidal thoughts.  A deficiency of this mighty mineral could result in more frequent headaches, migraines, fasciculation (twitching), muscle pain, fibromyalgia, poor nail growth, and asthma.  And if that's not bad enough, you could also develop leg cramps, tenderness all over your body, a weak heart, high blood pressure, and thicker, stickier blood.
Since magnesium is married to calcium and used to build bone, a magnesium deficiency could cause bone brittleness (osteoporosis), a condition more likely to occur in women.  In fact, women have a particularly hard time of it when they run low on magnesium.  In addition to osteoporosis, we see a lot more emotional instability and PMS symptoms such as tearfulness, cramps, mood swings, and irritability--even panic attacks.
Kids need magnesium for healthy brain function.  Studies have shown that low magnesium can cause attention deficit problems.  In fact, medical researchers have known about this effect for quite some time.  One study done way back in 1997 found that 95 percent of kids with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) were deficient in magnesium.  In 1987, another trial included 75 magnesium-deficient children with ADHD who were randomly assigned to receive either magnesium along with their standard treatment or just their standard treatment alone for 6 months.  Those who received magnesium showed a significant improvement in personality and behavior, while the control group exhibited worsening behavior over the study period.  This explains why many natural supplements for ADHD contain magnesium. The mineral helps relax the brain and allow more focus.
For children 1 to 3 years old, 80 mg; for children 4 to 8, 130 mg; and for children 9 to 13, 240 mg.  Make sure you let your child's pediatrician know about the supplement.  If your child takes medication, you'll want to get the doctor's approval before starting.
I often recommend this mineral to people with depression (for mood stability), fibromyalgia (because it reduces muscle pain), and anger management problems and for aggressive personalities (for its calming effects).  Make no mistake, if you are married to a Tasmanian devil who blows his or her fuse at the sight of dirty dishes, magnesium won't do a thing for it.  It's really for people who want to chill out a bit more, stop being worrywarts, feel more content, or reduce the frequency of panic attacks.
Some experts think magnesium has a place in treating suicidal depression, and I happen to agree.  Anyone with serious depression should, of course, be under a doctor's care.  But do ask the doctor about adding a magnesium supplement to the treatment regimen.  It goes without saying that it's a good bet for milder forms of depression as well.  Many of my friends have taken magnesium for this reason with good results afterwards.
I've saved the best surprise of all for last: One bar of exceptionally dark chocolate contains about 300 mg of magnesium.  I've drawn the conclusion that chocolate is not only good for your soul, it's also good for your brain! Sweet.

Excuse-Proof Your Workout Routine

Here are ways to short circuit the most common excuses for not exercising. Put them to good use.

The Excuse: It’s too cold outside.
The Fix: Keep the core of your body warm. When your body starts to feel cold, it diverts blood flow from your arms and legs to your chest and abdomen as a way protect vital organs. That’s why your toes and fingers get so cold, even when the rest of your body doesn’t. Keep your torso warm with the right clothing, and you prevent that process, so the rest of you stays equally comfortable. To do this, layer in threes.
    1. Don a snug-fitting base layer made of a non-cotton fabric that wicks moisture from your skin. Clothes that contain polypropylene or fabrics such as CoolMax and Supplex are good examples.
    2. Next put on a bulkier mid-layer made of fabric such as fleece that will insulate and also continue to move moisture out. Vests are ideal for this.
    3. Cover everything with a wind-and-moisture resistant jacket or shell. Choose a zippered model, rather than a pullover. Add a light scarf or hat and warm gloves and you’re good to go.

The Excuse: It’s raining.
The Fix: Water-resistant clothing, of course. A walk in the rain is actually fun, particularly if it’s a warm rain. It only gets uncomfortable when your clothes get water-logged. Prevent that by wearing a wind-and-water resistant jacket with a hood. Splurge and get yourself water-resistant pants. And if you don’t have rain boots, wear water-resistant hiking boots or winter shoes. Everyone who enjoys being outside should have top-to-bottom rain gear, ready to go at any time!

The Excuse: I’m just not feeling motivated.
The Fix: Commit to an event. There are probably dozens of walking and running events in your area come spring and summer. Pick one and register. Having a goal that’s more concrete and focused than “keep my weight in check,” plus laying out an entry fee or recruiting sponsors for a charity event will keep you motivated.

The Excuse: I feel tired and rundown.
The Fix: Use sunlight as your ally. One of the biggest motivation sappers isn’t fatigue, but a simple lack of sunlight. This causes a drop in vitamin D, which in turn is linked to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or depression. To avoid it, walk during the brightest times of day. This may mean that you need to take a 20-minute walk during your lunch break at work, rather than your usual morning or evening trek. Also, try to keep the shades open on the windows in your house or at work to let as much light in as possible.

The Excuse: I’m too busy today to exercise.
The Fix: Sneak in “relaxation” walks between meetings and commitments. Three brisk 10-minute walks deliver pretty much the same physiological benefit as one 30-minute workout. And if your day is that stressful and packed, you need a few breaks to refresh your mind and spirit as well.

World Health Organisation

Diabetes Bread-Buying Guide

Bread can be a nutritious part of your daily diet, or it can be a minefield of danger for your blood sugar. Follow these simple bread-buying tips and you’ll never have to wonder if your loaf of bread is sabotaging your diabetes maintenance.
• Buy whole-grain bread with the word “whole” as the first ingredient.
• Look for at least 3 grams of fiber per serving.
• The coarser the bread, the better. That texture indicates that the healthiest parts of the grain have been preserved. And the coarser the grain, the more it requires digestion, slowing the release of blood sugar into your system. Even whole wheat raises blood sugar more when it’s finely ground than when it’s coarser.
• If you see sugar, corn syrup, or any other sweetener in the first four ingredients, just say no.
• If shopping at a bakery where breads are fresh and unlabeled, be sure to ask about what type of flour or grain was used before buying. Molasses, fruit, and other add-ins can make a white bread appear the color of whole-grain bread.

Hard Truths About Blood Pressure

Fully 60 percent of people with diabetes have high blood pressure. And the chances of a person with diabetes having serious heart disease are several times greater than for people without diabetes. Which is good reason to understand blood pressure, to take it seriously, and to do what it takes not to let this plot take its natural, sad course.

High blood pressure isn’t new. For the last century or so, that simple measurement has helped identify people whose hearts could betray them at any moment. Still, people tend to underestimate how serious the problem is. Some of that is because high blood pressure has no symptoms: You don’t feel it, see it, or hear it. And for many of us, we don’t understand it and how it might affect us. Our goal today is to fix that.

And the easiest way is with the well-used but effective “garden hose” analogy. If you turn on the water and partially block the end of the hose with your thumb, the hose will bulge and the water will squirt out more forcefully around your thumb. Add a spray nozzle and you can increase the pressure enough to knock dirt off lawn furniture or loose paint off the exterior of your house. And all you’ve done is narrow the opening through which water must pass.

Your arteries are a lot like that hose, except that they form a closed loop. Blood is pumped through them from the heart, and courses through the body before returning to the heart and lungs to pick up fresh oxygen and be pumped back out again. But when blood pressure rises for whatever reason—such as narrowing of the arteries—the blood, which has no passageway out of the system, is forced up against the artery walls with increasingly brutal force.

Over time, the pressure can create bulges in the weak parts of artery walls, forcing the body to make repairs that stiffen the walls and reduce flexibility of the arteries. What’s more, as blood under pressure races through your arteries, it can knock off pieces of loose built-up plaque and detritus which can lodge in narrowed passageways, blocking the flow of blood to the heart and triggering a heart attack. Even if high blood pressure doesn’t lead to a heart attack, it causes your heart to work harder to push blood through your circulatory system. This taxes your heart muscle, causing your heart to enlarge and weaken. Eventually, the muscle may fail.

That’s the reason why your blood pressure is taken before you even see the doctor at every medical appointment. It’s that important. The exact causes of high blood pressure are still a bit of a mystery. But we do know that several factors and conditions may play a role.
• Smoking
• Being overweight or obese
• Lack of physical activity
• Too much salt in the diet
• Too much alcohol consumption (more than 1 to 2 drinks per day)
• Stress
• Older age
• Genetics
• And as we said at the start, diabetes

How to combat it? We’ll cover this in a future issue. But for now, monitor your blood pressure closely and often. Blood pressure tends to rise and fall based on continuously changing variables such as diet, stress, sleep, and activity levels. The best indicator of your blood pressure is the average of multiple screenings taken at different times of the day.

我的同事說:小A(也就是我同事的朋友)仍在等小C的消息。
